In the first volume Ulla Salzgebar shows how to apply the classical principles of dressage. In her softly spoken yet firm and insistent manner, she teaches the importance of cause, effect and recognition regarding the rider's aids on a variety of horses from four to ten years old. The emphasis here is principally on the transitions from walk to trot and vice-versa, how to prepare and execute transitions, and the importance of using the half halt. In the programme Ulla takes two students through a series of movements including serpentines, rein back and changing rein. In doing so she highlights the importance of forward planning and preparation when riding a test, and using the half halt between transitions.
At the end of each lesson, Ulla gives a commentary without instruction as each student rides a dressage test. Afterwards the students are asked to give an opinion on their performance and the difference of perception between rider and instructor/judge is explored.
