Eventing at the FEI World Equestrian Games was quite simply the best competition anyone could have wished for.
Fourteen countries contested the team competition with a further eight sending individual riders.
Germany were favourites for the team gold and they did not disappoint the home crowds by leading throughout the 4 days. They were the only country to get three riders around the cross country without penalties. Rudiger Schwarz's course caused problems all the way around with top riders such as William Fox-Pitt (GB), Andrew Hoy (Aus) and reigning World Champion Jean Teulere (Fra) all being caught out.
However, the star of the show was the reigning European Champion Zara Phillips, who showed an ice cool nerve in the dressage, considerable skill in conquering Schwarz's cross country course and then great courage when hanging on to her lead in the showjumping.
A classic contest with comprehensive coverage of the cross country sandwiched between highlights of the dressage and the concluding show jumping rounds.
