Training a foal is no child's play! It can be a fascinating experience, but it requires the correct mixture of experience, horse knowledge and intuitive feeling. Correct training follows from knowledge of how horses develop physically, mentally and behaviourally. A horse which has been treated incorrectly as a foal may never be reliable. It may be prone to suspicion and panic reactions throughout its entire life. A well-trained foal is much easier to back and its first hack will be a less risky undertaking.

In addition to the essential basic knowledge, the author offers tips and suggestions to ensure the successful training of your foal:

  • imprint training
  • first learning steps
  • weaning the foal
  • problems of 'adolescence'
  • obedience and discipline
  • first gymnastic exercises
  • initial backing

Renate Ettl is an equine sports therapist and has bred horses for many years, she has also written a number of equestrian books.
