Description

Details

This book charts the magnetic appeal of the Grand National by those who didn't win it and one who did. Every year there is one Grand National winning jockey and thirty-nine who made the attempt but failed to win the world's most famous horse race.

Some of those who tried time and again but never won were great champions among them Stan Mellor, John Francome and Peter Scudamore, while lesser known riders such as John Keanneally and Simon Burrough came agonisingly close to writing their names on the most famous roll of honour in racing. Kieth Barnfield's only ride fell at the first fence, and Ray Goldstein's sole attempt landed him in Walton Hospital.

In 'Go Down to the Beaten' racing historian Chris Pitt examines every Grand National since the Second World War and distils the magic of the race through the eyes of jockeys who, for one reason or another, did not manage to reach the pinnacle to which every jump jockey aspires. And he ends with the heart warming tale of how AP McCoy, winningmost rider in jump racing history, finally broke his Grand National hoodoo at the fifteenth attempt in 2010.

A unique angle - inspirational, moving and frequently funny, on the greatest horse race of all.
